It is a well-known fact that foods containing large amounts of simple sugars, high fructose corn syrup and refined grains (white breads and rolls) do not satisfy our hunger very well. Further, these foods produce signals in the nervous and hormone system in our brain, stomach, liver, pancreas and colon that tell us our hunger is not satisfied. This can lead to obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes.
On the other hand, complex carbohydrates as in whole grains, fresh vegetables, fruits, and certain prebiotic dietary supplements send a very different message. Not the least of these is the effect on our sense of hunger and fullness.
Certain hormone proteins flow from the stomach and colon into the blood and then to the brain. They tell us when we have eaten enough. Complex carbohydrates fill and linger in the stomach longer, resulting in a decreased appetite and easier weight control. Some research has indicated that Prebiotics increase the level of these "satiety" hormones.
Beyond that, obesity and diabetes may be less likely when whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and oligofructose enriched inulin (such as in our Prebiotin™ prebiotic fiber formula), are used.
