Prebiotic Fiber Supplement Increases Calcium Absorption

Printable Version | Email
Prebiotic Fiber may significantly increases the absorption of calcium and magnesium.

Prebiotin consists of two prebiotic plant fibers called oligofructose and inulin. Medical researchers have found that when these prebiotic fibers are fermented by the good colon bacteria, the acidity in the colon increases. This acidity appears to be a key cause of increased calcium absorption. Other effects of prebiotics, such as increased production of calcium-binding proteins, release of bone-modulating factors such as phytoestrogens from foods, etc., may also contribute to increased calcium absorption.

Some remarkable things have been demonstrated. A US Dept. of Agriculture / Baylor University study showed that young adults who took oligofructose enriched inulin (i.e. the ingredient in Prebiotin) for one year had a significant increase in calcium absorption. But the "proof in the pudding" is that their bone density increased 20% more than those who didn't take the prebiotic fiber.

Any increase in the bone density of adolescents should be an asset for the rest of their lives. It means that the gradual downhill loss of bone mass that occurs with age begins at a higher level and so the person should have stronger bones the rest of her life.

But it's never too late! A study by the Veterans' Administration in Palo Alto, CA showed that oligofructose-enriched inulin led to increased calcium absorption and an upward trend in bone formation in postmenopausal women - the group most at risk for osteoporosis!
