Meet Frank Jackson, M.D., FACP, FACG

Dr. Frank Jackson had been a practicing gastroenterologist in Pennsylvania for more than 30 years when he started the patient information web site gicare.com in the 1990s. Without any promotion, the site has attracted four million unique visitors per year. After retiring from private practice, Dr. Jackson studied a growing body of new research about prebiotics and the microbiota of the colon. The implications were profound. Many research volunteers have seen noticeable improvements in their health by using prebiotics. Dr. Jackson founded Jackson GI Medical to teach consumers, physicians and hospitals about this new field, provide relevant products, and help patients take an active part in being healthy. A former president of the Pennsylvania Society of Gastroenterology, Dr. Jackson also has an interest in heart health and was founder of the first commercial cardiac rehabilitation program in the United States in the 1970s. He is an inventor of many medical devices in GI and other fields.

Story ideas

Prebiotics - an emerging field in healthcare. A prebiotic is a special type of plant fiber that reaches the colon unchanged. There, it is fuel and nourishment for the myriad numbers of good bacteria. When these good bacteria thrive and multiply, teens and adults reap multiple health benefits, including improved calcium absorption and bone health. Your story can look at the latest research in prebiotics and answer that mysterious question: So what's the difference between prebiotics and probiotics?

The NIH Gastrointestinal Microbiome. The National Institutes of Health has launched a three-year, $3 million project to identity the genes within the entire bacterial community in the human colon. Researchers seek to find out all they can about the gut microbiota and how it interacts with the human body, similar to what has been done with the human genome. With this information, we'll be able to further understand and expand on the positive benefits of "good" colon bacteria for overall health. The project will likely have a significant impact on our understanding and treatment of many colon diseases as well. The study involves 250 volunteers in four locations in the U.S. It starts this year and will conclude in 2011. Dr. Jackson can offer expert commentary about this project and its potential ramifications for public health. More details

Prebiotics and calcium: Some of the most exciting research on prebiotics shows an increase in calcium absorption and in bone density among teens taking prebiotics. Researchers are looking at whether prebiotics might be able to prevent or slow osteoporosis in adults. More details

A wonderful colon: Most people have no idea how important the colon and its good bacteria are for good health. More details
