Fiber in Food Groups

  • Milk and milk products – There is no plant fiber in milk but manufacturers may add fiber to dairy products such as yogurt. Read the labels.
  • Vegetables – Vegetable juice without the pulp is satisfactory as are the following cooked vegetables: yellow squash (without seeds), spinach, pumpkin, eggplant, potatoes (without the skin), and asparagus. There will be some fiber in almost every vegetable, so the total daily quantity of fiber should be on the small side.
  • Fruits – Juices without the pulp are fine. Fresh fruit should be minimal as significant fiber is present in most.
  • Meat, poultry, fish – There is no fiber in these animal foods, but fatty, grisly pieces should be avoided.
  • Fats and oils – These are an excellent source of calories with no fiber.
  • Breads, grains – Avoid all whole grain breads and baked goods, brown rice, bran cereals, oatmeal. Refined flour and white bread are fine as is white rice.
  • Miscellaneous – Avoid nuts, popcorn, coconut, pickles, relish and most other foods where the fiber content is unknown.
